I wondered if there would be a way to use the upper bytes as extra memory (say 2M@8bit from 1M@16bit) - i.e. attach both halves (D0-D7 and D8-D15) to the same 8-bit data bus through some 3state buffers with CE attached to one of high address lines (one chip - normal, one negated), but still the data is written to the byte as a whole, so we'd probably need some external latch to keep/rewrite the lower byte whyle the upper is being stored, unless on high impedance at input the memory keeps its old value on write... Sounds like a dangerous assumption and more effort than it's worth though?
