Do Some reaseach on the development cost. That will slow them down. Assumming PCI is good for years (most Likly). The NRE will be steep. Do not forget the Driver and API development. You will need windows cetification of the driver.

You could just buy a 485 PCI card. The computer would not care if it was PCI or USB
