(and get some man hours of work for yourself to design the PCI card nobody will buy anyway)

That would be totally unethical. I have seen engineers not caring about ethics, none of them lasted long.
There will be situations where management pull you kicking and screaming into making something not useful or dead wrong, in those cases make sure your kicking and screaming is on file for reference.
