Off the shelf smart sensors with digital readout and conectivity with a micro or pc would cost $$$$$.
doing the sensors yourself with ADC would be demanding from your hardware skills. Actually, doing the sensors yourself would also be demanding in terms of analogue hardware design for the sensor selection, drive & signal condition; digital deign for the microcontroller, display, and digital interfaces; firmware design & development for the microcontroller; PCB design; mechanical design of the box; etc, etc, etc,... Then you would have to build them & test them! When you compare the cost of all that to the $$$$$ for a ready-made, off-the-shelf, guaranteed & supported unit - you realise that it actually represents good value. The $$$$$ also buys you a unit that's been deisgned by people who know what they're doing, and have years of experience in the field. It would probably also come complete with PC drivers! As this thread is actually about an entry in a microsoft.net contest, and considering all of the above, I think they would be far better off buying ready-made, off-the-shelf interface unit(s). |
