I think you still have some fundamental problems. The 7805 is not expected to work at 10mhz - it wants DC!

As for the PIC vs 8051 comparison based on 2-5v vs 4-5.5v - if your regulator was ok, then this comparison is invalid. Your regulator circuit must give the cpu 5V - if it doesn't - you'll have problems like you have now. As I've said before, I have similar circuits that switch 3 phase motors, hydraulic solenoids etc all without a glitch - am I'm not doing anything magic. It would seem that the switching spikes from the solenoids are getting back into your power supply.

How does your circuit compare with the PIC based device? How does it work where yours doesn't - there must be a fundamental difference! Would the PIC processor work if you modified your circuit board?
