I looked in a data sheet for a Samsung clone of the HD44780 chip and noted this timing diagram. It is very clear that the signals RW, RS and CS are subject to a SETUP timing requirement BEFORE the rising edge of the E pulse. Then it is the falling edge of the E pulse that makes the controller chip latch in its data.



The lesson here is that all that write embedded software need to also read data sheets AND use an oscilloscope!!!
