From what I know of how compilers work, which isnt much, I would say that 2k of code space doesnt really allow the more effient optimisation routines room to do thier thang rather than it being a problem with your coding style.
Have you tried sdcc which is free open source ansi complient and for most jobs really rather good? and isnt limited in any way.
