Put your few bytes of data into a data structure definition. Then add some kind of check code to it like a CRC or XOR-LRC code. Allocate a couple blocks of the card....say zero and one and write the copies of the data there...

For such a small amount of data I would really look into using a very low cost serial EEPROM such as a 93C46 or a Dallas I-Button 1-wire RAM/EEPROM product.
