As usually - try stripping the code to absolute minimum but working as you described and post it here (insert it between <pre> and </pre> tags to achieve the non-proportional look).

I receive the following on my Hyperterminal AT OK This is normal, the phone/modem first echoes back the characters you have sent (some of them capitalising them but usually not), and after it sends the answer. This behaviour can be changed (using ATE0), but usually echo is on by factory default so you better count with it. (Most of the modems you can even force into a mode when they will not respond "OK" "ERROR" etc., but numbers only, such as "0" for OK, etc. - but again, this is usually not the default behaviour).
