Let's see if this qualifies as ironic.
We're talking about Indian languages, which led to the American Indians, which are only Indians because an Italian, paid by a Spainiard to find a better route to the spice trades, had absolutely no clue that he was just about as far off course as was physically possible. Anyway, it was all about the spices. And what's the principle spice? What's the Mother of all spices? Salt. Now am I mistaken, or is it not the case that English towns that end with the suffix "shire" were originally built up around a salt work? |
