Alternatively, you could tackle the poblem from the other end, and look at ways to reduce your IO pin requirements:

SPI and I2C have already been mentioned - these are low-pin-count interfaces.

Or there's the Dalla 1-WireTM bus - requires only a single IO pin for a virtually unlimited number of peripherals.
It's not that fast, but certainly very economical on IO pins!
