Why on earth Why on earth not?! It'll probably cost a bit more than a standard part, but if no standard part meets the requirements it may well be a viable option. Especially if you have specialist and/or extensive IO requirements. Once you have the FPGA, things that you'd normally do in software become a lot easier to do in "hardware" With the prices Actel are suggesting for their latest parts, it could be quite economical.
