I misunderstood your post, I see you are asking about "hyperterminal and MAX", not "8051 and MAX".

If you have a problem with hyperterminal and MAX, check the following:

first (no insult - I have made that mistake) READ the actual type of your MAX chip and get the datasheet.

Then check

1) Ground to ground (PC to uC board) should be a virtual zero.
2) how are the caps on the MAX (if tantalum check polarity)
3) are the MAX caps the right size (various MAXs use various capsizes)
4) is the power supply decoupled right at the MAX chip
5) is the power supply sufficient (the max can be hungry)
6) does the MAx have "sleep mode" if so, disable it
