I have a similar story - the product was copied not only with the errors; they even used the same font for the labels marking the buttons... Except, they came from a country where they don't have the particular type of "accents" we use on certain letters - they omitted those :-) They even had the guts to put it in front of our machines on a local exhibition... Copying is sometimes so fast that the competitor is able to come out with the copy within days if not hours of your upgrade appeared on the market - while you worked on it for months...
