#102408 - It's a disaster to forbid lead in solder Responding to: ???'s previous message |

it really is a pain to use with a normal soldering iron Melting point of lead free solder is about 220°C, while standard solder shows 190°C. This is a real huge difference when dealing with SMD components! And this will make trouble in the next moths and years: Reliability will heavily suffer. Wait for the next airplanes that will drop to earth due to electronics failures. I'm absolutely sure that these things will happen. Not, that it's impossible to solder boards properly, but the 'success margin' is drastically lowered, because only slight tolerances in the soldering setup will make the boards fail or get overstressed. Just the latter is much more dangerous, because the predamage is invisible!! To my point of view, it's totally stupid to neglect the use of lead in solder, if performance is such drastically worsened. It would have been much better to force industry to install a rigid recycling programm for soldered boards to prevent lead from contaminating our environment. But that's the result, when politicians decide things who do not have any clue of the consequences. Would it be possible to easily neglect lead in solder, be sure it would never have been mixed into it. Kai |
