You can't just replace the VHC244 with a std. HC541.

And since this device isnt build with were in the workbench junkbox, the save yourself the trouble and buy the original cable from Atmel.

BTW - check out if your PC has a old fashion parallel printer port! Neither the Atmel cable or its kitchen table brothers and sisters will work with an usb to parallel adapter.
