Have a look at this schematic:

http://www.atmel.ru/Software/files/isp_c_v5.pdf

which is the original ISP cable from ATMEL. Try to find out, why the 74VHC244 is used and not any other.

If the links we gave you are not enough, than type 74VHC244 in the search box of this site and read all the found links.
