it is clear from the Atmel sch that 'auto' will be connected to pin 14 of the DB25 (see page 2). INI is not related to the DB25 side of the adaptor, it goes to the target board. see 10 pin header connections. I think that is used in some board from ATMEL, i never used INI and AF.

HCT is the TTL ouput CMOS chips nothing else a VHC is required. Why? See Kai's detailed answer about that in the forum.
