#132400 - Maximum Reliable UART Baud Rates for 805x
Hi Everybody,

The SiLabs CP2102 datasheet states that it will support up to 921600 baud on the UART side. I'm curious to know if an 805x (with an appropriate crystal) could also support such a high baud rate (or higher). Are there are any limitations, other than crystal frequency (clock speed), to the maximum reliable baud rate the 805x UART can achieve.

I'm not asking about calculating the reload value to select a particular baud rate for a given clock frequency. I'm asking in other words, is there some upper limit baud rate at which an 805x UART can be theoretically configured to run, but that in practice just won't work reliably? Or is it the case that if you can configure it for that baud rate, the 805x will handle it?

And if there is an upper limit, how dependent is it upon manufacturer (e.g. chip architecture/layout, slew rate)? Or is it something that is manufacturer independent (e.g. board layout, something intrinsic to the 805x definition)?

Finally, in the search I performed prior to posting this thread I saw that Erik cites achieving 480 kBaud (though I don't know now if he was using the built in UART or bitbanging the data himself). What are the highest baud rates you've achieved with the built in UART, and what difficulties did you run into and how did you contend with them?

Thanks,

Joe
