In PCs the common practice is to use 75232 or equivalent, even if the UART itself (integrated or standalone on an expansion card) is an "enhanced" one capable of higher speeds (remember, I do look under the hood :-) ). Check out it's datashhet and also the MAX232 equivalents' datasheets.

The standard max in PC is 115200 anyway, so using anything beyond it requires nonstandard UART and nonstandard drivers etc.

IIRC, even the 232 standard (TIA or whatever) require slew rate limitation which limits the max. speed to below 200k (dont take this literally, I didn't check the actual value).

There are only a few '51+232 applications which don't involve a PC...
