The bigger the Relay coil the bigger the spike.
It the spike is just the right size it can damage the circuits. Your regulator gets hit first. What does your scope say? does the pulse affect Vcc?
Does putting a diode in solve the problem?

A watch dog may hide the problem, but it does not fix it.
