They claim Metalink assembler support. The information needed for the source level debugging is found in the .lst file - that's the only file the assembler produces besides the .hex file.

I will also add an another one which uses it: I have the Ramtron (ex-Goal) Versa kit (it contains the '51 with the builtin FRAM), which has JTAG debug built in, too. They claimed Metalink assembler support, too, but it took them 5 more issues of the software to do so.

How do you think they will react to a mail, stating: "I don't intend to buy your ICE, but the software which you give away for free did not work for the less likely target "toolchain"..."

I'd throw such out of the window, with a couple of well selected words.
