Thanks to everyone for your suggestions - they are much appreciated.

I have tried using the serial port to debug this project but that has not allowed me to isolate the problem. Like Erik I prefer to use ICE.

The standard PDS51 for 89C51 etc. can be configured to load the Metalink .LST file so I will call Acqura and ask them more details about using the PDS900 ICE with a P89LPC9408. The P89LPC9408 contains two physical chips in one package - a P89LPC938 and a PCF8576D LCD driver. The two chips communicate via I2C.

I'm thinking that I can wire up a P89LPC938 and a PCF8576D into my project breadboard as a replacement of the P89LPC9408 and use the PDS900 ICE.
