Just to be clear, you want to do this without using an RS232 tranceiver, yes?

Of course, if you did use an RS232 tranceiver there would be no question - it would certainly work!
Therefore, you need to ask yourself the question: does the cost saving of the transceivers justify the research that will be necessary to prove that it will work without them? Only you can answer that one!

The main thing you need to consider is the capacitance of the cable - will the port pins be able to drive it sufficiently to give clean enough edges at the other end for reliable detection?

You also need to consider noise pickup, and emissions.

And don't forget that modern RS232 tranceivers also provide ESD protection, short-circuit protection, etc, etc...
