Your LCD works fine in 8 bit mode, so I would assume that you have RW safely at GND. If it is connected to a PORT pin make sure that you DRIVE that pin low.

Otherwise I cannot see a deliberate mistake. Your unused pins on LCD_PORT should not make any difference.
