1) Unused pins are being ignored by the processor. The question here is ,is there that much electromagnetic noise which is capable of disturbing the internal Mos-pullups ??
2) If we speculate noise as the issue , then we dont pullup the the databus that we interact with, and is not all the time exchanging information.
Maybe the LCD part/lot under investigation has some design issues?.
