I see the difference between a real ICE and on-chip debugging tools. Some of the OCDs provide rudimentary tracing support, e.g. in Ramtron's Versa; however, you are left with whatever tools the chip provider decided to implement. On the other hand, OCD has the advantage over ICE in that you are using the real target processor for the debugging, not an emulation replacement (this is true also for some ICEs, though; in the '51 world these are mainly those which use the MetaLink's technology).
For most of the commercial work OCD is a fair value; however I see the need for a true ICE in some applications. Sorry, I can't say anything more for regarding the uPSDs - as I said, I have no personal experience with the 4-clockers (and the 12-clocker uPSD32xx don't have the OCD implemented). Vaclav said:
