Hi Natty,
I also use the method Richard described: disconnect the cable, on the end connect RXD and TXD and see if the keys you type are echo-ed on the screen. If this works, check for correct baudrates on both sides (target board and terminal). If they are also correct, than the problem will probable be your target board or its download software....
