I checked both 89C51 and 89C55WD, and i didn't find hardware differences causing your problem.

Program a 89C55 with the same program from your 89C51 and put the 89C55 in the same hardware circuit. (ie same crystal for same clock, same reset circuit...)

Is this caussing any problem ?
