I haven't looked at the 89C55WD, however if it works like the Dallas DS5000 i have worked maybe you should try disabling the WD at the start of your program.

Maybe your watchdog timer is activated on Reset and this is why you only get the first character on the display. Due to continuous resets before writing the rest of the characters.

You haven't stated what happens to the rest of micro's operations. Is your problem only located in the LCD?

I am not an old timer (i am only 23) but when i get a problem i try using everything i can. Maybe you can use the serial port to print breakpoint messages to your terminal screen and see what happens. If your first breakpoint messages recycle then your problem is the watchdog itself.

Even if i haven't resolved your problem at least i hope i have offered a simple way of testing which i haven't seen in any of the other messages.
