I have to say, these mindless threads propagate because people (many from regular contributors) seem unable to ignore them. Michael's response makes most sense - simply ignore bad posts (however you personally define them) - and let them wither on the vine. I am unable to find the time to read this forum regularly because of the sheer volume of responses. Lots of good stuff, but getting on for half are fatuous discussions of this type.
