I could see a point in fitting an obselete, non available part as software in a micro/FPGA/CPLD or whatever. But I cant get the logic in making yourself trouble re-inventing the wheel in order to implement a simple port expander. Stephane, I think you should try kicking your distributor. The last PCF8574's I boght from Arrow costed me 11,37 kr - thats aprox. 1.50 euro.
