I would like to answer your questions Michael:

* Does your proposed system work best when the panel size is very small or infinitely large, relative to a given light source?

Of course it will work beter with larger panel. But! If you have smaller panel, orientation error will not be so significant to power. If you have very big panel, 3degrees may have very big effect! So, my sugested method should work for any panel. (I think so :)

* For a given panel size, does your proposed system work best if the light source is very close to the panel or infinitely far away?

If you are going to use wide angel sensors, it would not work at all! But if you use narrow angle sensor, or sensor mounted in to short tube, it should work fine.
