You need to look at modern version 8051 chips. These have on board FLASH and can be programmed in circuit. Search this forum for the term ISP which means In System Programming.

I have an application which requires programming the program memory online. Solution should be cheap.
My idea is to connrct a simple ROMless 8051 to an external flash and RAM memories. A boot loader will run from the flash and copy the program to the RAM which will then run from there. So, at this point the RAM and Flash swapped rules between program and dat meomories, and know i am able to program the program memory online for the next start up.
This solution requires simple HW but some compilers manipolation for the branching.
