In my applications the serial interrupt is usually more important than lets say an external interrupt 0, but the interrupt priority says that a serial interrupt is number 9 in priority and the the external interrupt 0 is number 3 in priority. The only way around this would be to disable interrupts while servicing the communication port. I agree that interrupts are very useful, just that they are double edged sword, and must be well thought out.
