which resolution do you mean ?

I think in this application a resolution of 1RPM was sufficient. But this ist still far away from the possible resolution.

Since I use 32 bit floating point numbers the maximal resolution can be up to 6 digits (0.01RPM).

But higher resolution can also be possible on using my scalable arithmetic library in assembler (e.g. 64bit numbers). Also you must use an oven controlled calibrated crystal as time base to achieve the higher resolution in real

Only if you want to count input signals, which exceed the maximum input frequency of the 8051, only then you need additional divider circuits.

But I agree, that many people have difficulties to design proper software to read a counter on the fly and expand it to more as 16 bit by software.
