I suggest you get yourself a Copy of The 'C' Programming Languge, by Kernighan & Ritchie.
a valuable reference, but probably the worst possible book for a beginner.

A much better choice for the beginner would be Kochan: "programming in ANSI C" ISBN 0-672-40408-0 Ask if ISBN changes with new editions, mine is quite old.
