I suggest you pay him a salary and a percentage of the business he personally brings to the company as incentive, if he likes he can pay his incentive as shares in the company till he eventually becomes a full partner.
How about asking your friend his opinion about the matter and what he thinks he should work as.
I disagree with Mike, friends could make better business than non friends partners.
