Tim,
I think you just answered the question "important to company" or "friend" how would it be to shift him in the marketing If he was important to the company in what he is doing you would not consider "shifting him in the marketing. In this light, between 8 and 5 forget you are friends, pay him what he is worth (and I hope your working relationship stay good) and forget about treating him any different than any other employee.
