If Paul wants to go retro with computer input devices why not paper tape? There was 7 parallel bits if I remember correctly and
it was actually 8 bits and if you can find a garbage dump that has been covered for 10-20 years, rent a backhoe and on one of your first digs a teletype terminal is sure to comme up.
