Many moons ago, I worked with a PDP8 controlling a COM recorder with a teletype as I/O. Assembling a program of about 3k object took about 5 hours (you had to run your looooong sourcefile through twice) so I hired a kid to come in evenings and steer the papertape free of trouble when assembling. In those days it was a real conscience wrestling issue to comment your code (a 50 character comment added 10 seconds assemble time).
