Whilst we're at it, when I was doing my Army service (sounds like my grandfather telling stories :-)) we had those noisy rattling things called teltypes doing Baudot-code (5-bits) and also running at 10CPs ie 50 baud. They had a 20 mA current interface if my memory is right. I recycled one (as they were being phased out at that time) as a printer for a then brand new Atari 800 XL. Great fun and lots of noise...
