On all 32kHz RTC schematics you can see a trimmed capacitor, thus calibration was not only a point on software RTC.
But the software RTC gives the advantage, that you can solder fixed capacitors and make the calibration in software (easier, more accurate).

The link is already on the end of my last post.
And on my page there is also a complete ready for running thermometer clock code example based on it (my kitchen clock).
