If you're in doubt, why not use a relay? They're simple, cheap and robust.

Exact! Use a relay with contacts made of AgCdO or AgSnO, if high inrush currents must be switched, choose a saftey class II relay (high isolation voltage between coil and contacts and use a 275V varistor across load terminals.

You can use 5V or 6V relay, which can be powered either by 5V regulator or by big storage capacitor in front of 5V regulator in combination with suited current limiting resistor.

Of course, also 12V types can be used, but then you need an additional 12V power supply (transformer winding, storage capacitor, etc.)
