I personally learned only 8051 at my school, though I don't think it was because the school was "inferior" - just because it wasn't the profile of the studies. It was more to make students understand how microcontrollers work, what is the basics of PLC (during later years we had PLC), to learn basics of asembler where it's really useful - not a subject that we are meant to use in our professional work, just to gain insight into other, more "on topic" stuff. As a side result I caught a fancy for the '51 and it became my hobby, but in my paying job I'm quite far from microcontrollers. I know one sits in the machine I work with, but it's behind some 5-6 layers of software, protocols, interfaces etc from the stuff I personally do, so the chance I will ever see it is vague...
