Yes, thanks, but that's not for an 8051.

The link was not meant to provide you with a ready C-code for 8051, but to give useful information about '44780' LCD.
The links given at that website are also useful...

By thw way: What is the distance between your LCD and micro? Some '44780' LCDs show a very critical timing, which can easily be eroded by unsuited cable lengths. The reason, why your C-code does not work, can be that needed setup times are violated. This issue is discussed in some datasheets and was also discussed here several times. Make a search here!
