If it works in asm, why not use it.

No reason not to use it... but still not enough not to fix C. If it doesn't work from C and we don't know why, something else may not work from ASM or C and we don't know it wouldn't. Just the same argumentation you have used about hardware testing. Okay, use an ASM sniplet to get things done for now, but don't give up your search for a working C routine.
