If you want to use a carbide bit, you must use it with a small drill press. I have used a Dremel tool in a press stand for years.

? This is not as critical as using a very high shaft speed - 10-20,000 RPM works well with small bits. Low speed is also a killer for carbide bits. The best results come from air turbine drills, like the ones dentists use.

Incidentally, you can buy low cost "pre-owned" bits, that have come out of commercial drilling machines and have been resharpened. These are often a lot cheaper than new 'uns.
