it is easy to duplicate a one wire device with a little 8 pin micro. True, but it requires you to actually go the the trouble of building one. Each iButton has a unique serial number; so the most basic iButton access control system would verify the serial number - therefore you'd also have to somehow obtain a valid serial number. Other iButtons have password-protected, encrypted, writable areas; for increased security, these keys would be used & programmed with suitable data to control access. Then you'd have to not only steal a serial number, but also the password and the "key" data. Yet other iButtons have still further security features - see http://www.ibutton.com/products/...tml#secure Russell Bull said:
Smart card with crypto is much more secure. Well, that may or may not be true - the point is whether iButtons provide sufficient security for Shahzad's application. As I said before, iButtons are no less secure than a conventional physical key, and much better than just a keypad and access code! Some people are doing access control with iButtons - so we assume that it must provide sufficient security in at least some applications: http://db.maxim-ic.com/ibutton/a...n=DD&id=11 |
