In fact, many 74HCT devices will work just fine down to 1.5 volts. They may not have the speed but their logic functions perfectly. Oh dear, oh dear! Olde English proverb say: Man at bottom of deep hole should stop digging! How many times do we hear people saying things like, "it worked fine before; why has it stopped now?" The thing is, if you operate anything outside its specs, its behaviour is UNDEFINED - that means that it can do absolutely anything: it doesn't have to be reasonable; it doesn't have to be reliable; it doesn't have to be repeatable; it doesn't even have to be predictable.
